Getting the rights to do the movie Gorillas in the Mist was a race between Warner Bros. and Universal Pictures.

No one thought I was going to win—what with Mike Ovitz and his clout.
So I decided to tell my story to the gorillas.
I flew to Africa and met with the gorillas, and I made a deal with the people there that I would control the space where the gorillas lived.
You have to sell whatever you do on emotion.
As a result, I was able to make that film.
